Aging in Place
Abstract
Aging in place refers to the ability of older adults to live independently, safely, and comfortably in their own homes as they grow older, without the need to relocate to assisted living facilities. Key components supporting aging in place include home modifications, assistive technologies, access to healthcare, transportation, social support, financial planning, and home safety measures. These elements work together to ensure seniors can maintain autonomy and quality of life within familiar environments.
Independent home living closely aligns with aging in place, emphasizing the capacity to perform daily tasks without ongoing assistance. It relies on a supportive environment that accommodates changing physical or cognitive needs while promoting dignity, choice, and engagement. Both concepts prioritize enabling individuals to remain in their chosen living space for as long as possible, contributing to improved well-being and reduced institutional care reliance.
