From Readiness to Resilience: Lifelong Learning as the New Pillar of Quality Ageing

Abstract

As the global population ages, the focus must shift from merely preparing for old age to fostering the capacity to adapt, contribute, and thrive. “From Readiness to Resilience: Lifelong Learning as the New Pillar of Quality Ageing” explores how sustained learning empowers older adults to maintain relevance and autonomy in a rapidly changing world. Readiness—characterized by health literacy, digital access, and social inclusion—evolves into resilience through continuous cognitive, emotional, and practical development.
Drawing on WHO’s Decade of Healthy Ageing and UNESCO’s Learning Cities framework, this address presents compelling evidence linking lifelong learning with improved health outcomes, civic engagement, and economic participation. Case studies from Asia-Pacific and low-and middle-income countries highlight scalable, inclusive models that bridge digital, generational, and rural-urban divides. The session calls for integrating lifelong learning into national ageing agendas—alongside health, participation, and security—as a core strategy to build empowered, resilient, and inclusive societies for all generations.
