Not Just an “Old Folks’ Home”: Rethinking Aged Care as Lifestyle and Choice
Abstract
As Malaysia enters the era ofan aging population, conventional aged care options —such as home-based care, privately hired caregivers, or nursing homes —often lack structure, oversight, and quality assurance. Many facilities still operate under the outdated “old folks’ home” model, remaining unregistered, poorly managed, and staffed by untrained personnel. These shortcomings compromise care standards and reinforce negative perceptions of institutional living. There is a pressing need to transition towards a regulated, professionally operated senior living framework that offers tiered accommodation based on evolving care needs—ranging from independent to assisted and dependent living.
Purpose-built environments, supported by well-trained staff, robust care systems, and full regulatory compliance, are essential to ensuring quality, safety, and resident well-being. Aged care must be recognised not as a last resort, but as a dignified and deliberate lifestyle choice—one that integrates thoughtful design, operational excellence, and a person-centred approach to aging.
